Inspiration For a More Eco- Friendly Kitchen

So, what do you think about an eco friendly kitchen?

There are many ways to take your average kitchen and turn it eco! I'll go over a few.

Reusable Grocery Bags:
This is something that most of you probably do already, but something that is important nonetheless. Did you know that a typical grocery bag takes between 10 to 100 years to decompose? By keeping a reusable shopping bag handy when you go to the supermarket, you could keep a few grocery bags out of landfills for the foreseeable future!

TIP: Avoid overly packaged produce and plastic produce bags. Aim for raw, unpackaged produce and opt for reusable produce bags or paper alternatives.

Food Waste Composting:
The greenest way to dispose of food waste is by composting. When food scraps are placed into the garbage bin, they often times end up in a landfill. iWhen food scraps decompose in that way, they produce methane gas, a greenhouse gas that is far more potent than carbon dioxide. By keeping a small food waste bin in your kitchen or starting a community compost bin, you can significantly reduce the emissions of the harmful methane gases. In addition, it creates rich and beneficial soil for gardening and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.

Bamboo Brushes:
When purchasing any type of cleaning brush, or multi-use cleaning product, opting for the bamboo version will always decrease your ecological footprint. The reason for this is the simple fact that bamboo is biodegradable and plastic is not. If you remove the bristles of the brush, you could even put it into your compost bin!

Glass Bottles or Jars:
Opting for glass bottles and jars are often not only the most sustainable storage option, but also the healthier option! For sustainability purposes, glass is far more durable and can last years. It also is easily recycled, which further boosts its environmental credentials. When it comes to health, it is generally safer to choose glass food and beverage storage as it does not contain any of the harmful chemicals that are present in plastic, such as BPA which is beleived to disrupt the natural hormones of the body. Also, it is very easily sterilized provided for a safer kitchen environment.

TIP: As glass bottles and jars are easily sterilized, pick up a couple beverages or sauces in glass containers. Soak them in boiling water after you've used the product, and now you have a brand new food storage container! You'll never buy food storage containers again!

The pictures above will hopefully inspire you to make some waste- reducing changes in your kitchen routine. Good luck! You got this!

Let me know down below any sustainable practices that you've picked up!
